Aim

The aim is to design a "gray box".

  • You design a RLC-circuit containing resistors, inductors and capacitors, maximum of 5 components.
  • The box should contain the input (two wires) and the output (two wires).
  • Use the Circuitlab to design your circuit and simulate the behaviour.
  • Your design should work within 0.0 - 2.0 MHz range.
  • Use the components found in the laboratory (inductors, resistors and capacitors).

Example

Here is an example circuit designed with Circuitlab. It contains two input wires and two output wires. For simulation purposes the sine wave generator is added to the design. The outputs should be connected to oscilloscope.

The next photograph (Fig. 4) illustrates how the example circuit can be implemented on to the circuit board.

  • Input 1 - Red wire
  • Input 2 - Green wire
  • Output 1 - Yellow wire
  • Output 2 - Black wire

When you are ready you turn around your box and seal it with skrews.

Analysis

When you have tested your circuit, the teacher labels all the boxes and gives you another box. Your aim is now to analyse the other team's design.

  • Make careful measurements
  • Observe the amplitude and the phase shift on different frequencies
  • Repeat your measurements, if necessary
  • Based on your measurements, try to figure out how it is designed, e.g. what's inside the box.

Report

Write a final report where you:

  • Show your measurements
  • Show your interpretations
  • Make a circuit simulation based on your analysis
  • Compare the simulation results to your measurements
  • Estimate the uncertainties

In addition, make a another short document where:

  • you describe your original design
  • take good photographs of your design

This is used to compare the reports to the original designs.
