Facilities needed for the intensive course: Newsroom + radio studio (digital recorders andSH1  some computers with editing software), data projector.

Travelling arrangements (preliminary schedule, will be confirmed once the flights will be booked):

  • Flights from Namibia and Finland Sat 15.8.
  • Bus from Dar es Salaam to Iringa (Scandinavia) on Sunday 16.8. at 10.00
  • Return: Bus from Iringa to Dar on Sunday 23.8.
  • Flights 23./24.8.
  • Tanzanian students will do their own travelling arrangements, if they are staying outside Iringa in August. Travelling costs to and from Iringa will be compensated in exchange for bus tickets/receipts.

Accomodation:

For the Finnish and Namibian students and teachers, 10 single rooms will be booked from the Chaula Hotel. Pirita and Susanna will pay for all the rooms at the arrival.

Meals:

  • Participants will not receive a daily allowance, but their meal costs will be covered.

    Practicalities of the course

Duration: 5 days, Monday to Friday (Saturday free for excursions, such as a visit to Ruaha National Park, paid by participants themselves)

Lecturers in charge: Pirita Juppi is in charge of the introductory lectures on civic journalism and community media. Other lecturers from PON and IUCo will present cases from their home countries.  Sami Huohvanainen is in charge of teaching/tutoring the practical radio journalism workshop.

Monday:

Lecture: 9 orientaatio, esittäytymiset
10.00. Problems with the citizen/community access to the traditional media and journalism. By Pirita.

Practical: 13-14.30 Radio orientation. Journalistic workflow in the radio. Radio genres. Forming workshop groups (4 students each), brainstorming topics and groups of people who are silenced in the media. Checking the equipment, introduction to the field recording techniques and basic audio editing. Translation techniques. Technical rehearsals.

14.30-15 Coffee Break

Tuesday:

Lecture: 9. Participatory media. Citizen media. SAMI: Caset: M2HZ, Dina, Reaktori (Pepe ja Ida). Ideals and practises of civic journalism. Harjoitus: sisältöanalyysi, ketkä esillä?

Practical: 12. Workshop groups will decide their "target" community/social group (Monday?), their community/citizen-based methods of working and their topic, and start planning their project in details

Tue: 13 Radioanalyysi: (jos olis kamat) radio formats and the suitability of community/citizen based methods for different radio formats. Pre-production, research (topics in the media, library visits, interviews, discussion, internet), writing, production planning. Sami | |

 

Wednesday:

Lecture: Yhteisömediapäivä. Various forms of community media in Africa and ; in Europe. Pirita: introduction + Europe & Finland. Afrikka-caset: Gaspar: ; jotain , Elva: mainstream jotain..Practical: Students will do practical arrangements for their journalistic project (contacting communities, setting up meetings, interviews, discussions)
Network meetings. Wed: 13.30 - 18 Research and field recordings. Writing.

 

Thursday

9 - 18 Recordings. Editing, independent work, teachers will have their network meeting. Practical: Students will work independently on their civic/community journalism projects in the field, starting editing in the afternoon/evening
Network meeting: Teachers will have a full-day Jocid network meeting -
 __ Students will finish editing their journalistic productions before lunch.
After lunch: Listening to the productions, discussing them, evaluating the whole course.

 

 Friday

Final editing + deadline 1200 hrs. presentations + feedback 25 min/group + general discussion 1 hour.  Evening: Final dinner for the participants.

Lectures of the intensive could be open also for the community members engaged/interested in community radios (Lutheran church, Iringa Youth Development organization?).
