Purpose of the Project

The project aims to examine widely the problem field of the boats and to find an economically sensible solution to control and for controlling functions in standard ways.
The idea is to provide a platform for the equipment suppliers, manufacturers of boats and boat suppliers. With this platform Finnish boat know-how in key areas of the project will be raised to the top of the world.
The project focuses on craft control systems, equipment operation in the network and and boat softwares.

Markets

Market research

  • Segment volumes
  • Technologies in the near future
  • Future opportunities
  • Needs and problems
  • The necessary knowledge to market segments

Technique

  • Technological options
  • Current Standards
  • Ratings and rating agencies
  • Benchmark products

Research orientation

  • Controllability of the boat, equipment control, condition monitoring and the use of the boat's systems
  • Usability of the functions and user interfaces
  • Securing of equipments fault tolerance and functioning
  • Industry standards, in particular the CAN in Automation -association in Germany. The project is in close contact with this association, for example they/we? organized international conferences in the industry

Situation

At the moment, there are limited Finnish technology for steering the boat and for other equipment control.
NMEA0183 specification (from the USA) is widely used in navigation and assistive devices control. NMEA0183 is based on the transmit of ASCII signs in RS232, RS422 or RS485 serial bus. This standard is from 1980's. Another alternative is NMEA2000 which is based on standard SAE 1939 and CAN-protocol. CAN in Automation community has developed and open source device profile DS307 (Maritim). This would provide an open source European option, which would consist synergies also for machine technology.

The first technical target is to acquire newest knowledge and future opportunities of the industry for the boat manufacturers, equipment suppliers and craft suppliers. Another target is to develope open source and connectivity of devices and develope standard solutions for the area.

Result

  • The boat's manufacturer can claim the right solutions for electronics and software suppliers
  • The supplier of control devices knows requirements of the industry and is able to provide long life open source solutions for industry
  • Boat supplier or builder can be assured about technical accuracy of partial or total supply
  • Long life open source systems which allows further flexible developement of the boat's systems

Cases

  • Electric auxiliary engine of sailing boat
  • Workboats control
  • The equipments of multifunction boat
  • Sails' sensors and control
  • Digital hydraylics applications
