iBoats

The iBoats project will be three year project lead by Metropolia University of Applied Science. It's founded by Tekesthe Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation, including several co-operation companies working at the boat business. Tekes is the main public funding organisation for research, development and innovation in Finland.

The purpose of the project

The purpose of the project is to broadly examine the problem field of boats and to find an economically sensible solution to access-control, operations management in standardised ways.
The idea is to provide the equipment suppliers, boat manufacturers and suppliers a forum, where Finnish boat know-how in key areas can be raised to the top of the world. The project focuses on craft control systems, equipments working on-line as well as boat software.

Mets Trade

At the Mets Trade a group of students working at the iBoats project are searching the boat technology for Finish Boat manufacturers, boat suppliers and component manufacturers. The point of views at the searching are:

  • Life-cycle management of electronics and software
  • Management of the spare parts availability
  • Quality assurance
  • Ensuring Serviceability
  • Modulation of electronics and software as well as the re-usability of planning and software
  • Controlled updating of the electronics and software
  • Solutions approved by the rating agencies
  • Reliability and maintainability of the system
  • Clear criteria for acquisitions in electronics and control systems
  • Open standardized solutions and interfaces between systems
  • The keys to the total supply management
  • Ensuring the knowledge of the suppliers
  • Knowledge of the electronics and software requirements set by boat environment
  • Knowledge of the technology
  • Knowledge required for the total supply
  • Knowledge of the open standard solutions
  • Provides its own strategies and visions on a boat markets and provides market knowledge
  • Comparison of own products to the benchmark products
  • Volumes on the market segments
  • Technologies in the near future
  • Future opportunities
  • Identifying needs and problems
  • The knowledge required to market segments

Technology

  • Technological alternatives
  • Current Standardization
  • Ratings and rating agencies
  • Benchmark Products

Research and Study

  • Controllability of the boat, equipment control, condition monitoring and the use of the boat's systems
  • Usability of the functions and user interfaces
  • Equipment redundancy and backup operations
  • Industry standards, in particular the CAN in Automation Association in Germany, the project will be closely consulted association, for example.

Result

  • The boat manufacturers know how to claim the right decisions for the electronics and software vendors
  • Governance requirements of the supplier knows the area and are able to provide open industry standards steered their life cycle and long-term solutions
  • The boat buyer or builder can be sure that partial or total supply of technical accuracy
  • Open long-life systems, which allow the boat to the development of flexible systems.
