Electric propulsion and hybrid drives in the boats

General introduction

We have great knowledge of electric hybrid drives in Finland. This knowlegde can be also used to implementation of boats' energy-saving and progressive technology. Metropolia University of Applied Sciences wants help boat industry to gain more international competition to the industry.

Key persons:

  • Janne Kjellman, Electric Ocean Oy. He has experience in boats' hybrid drives and he knows requirements of sail boats' electronics.
  • Hannu Rantala, AlamarinJet Oy. He has experience in manufacturing the water jets and their use especially in workboats.
  • Jari Ijäs, Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. He has 15 year experience in electric propulsion systems in ABB.
  • Timo Kasurinen, Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. He has experience in planning of systems, electronics and softwares for data communications, instrumentation, kokemusta järjestelmien, elektroniikan ja ohjelmistojen suunnittelusta liittyen tietoliikenteeseen, mittalaitteisiin etc.
  • Heikki Paavilainen, Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. He has experience in work machine systems, especially in regulating unit.
  • Jari Savolainen, Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. He has experience in open source embedded controlsystems and their softwares and programming method.

  • Heikki Saarelainen, Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. He has experience in automation technology and boat using.

International co-operation

The project is done in close cooperation with international organizations NMEA and CiA.

Internal co-operation

Project is done in collaboration with Metropolia AMK and TUT.

Enterprise commitment

The project has involved Ocean Electric Oy and AlamarinJet Oy. Both companies need the latest technology and currently available solutions on the market are the major manufacturers closed source systems. Open equipment communication and electronic solutions are needing still plenty of development to serve small and flexible firms.

Utilization of results

The developed technology by the project will be moved to the participating companies. Especially Electric Ocean Oy gets ready-made product concept and technology solution for implementation.
